Preserving Dignity: Restored Fire Truck Serves as Memorial Transport
In the heart of the close-knit Caribou, Maine’s community, a restored fire truck has become a symbol of reverence and respect. Once used to battle blazes, this vintage 1922 American Lafrance that was restored in the late 1980’s by former Caribou firefighters, now serves a special purpose. That purpose is carrying fallen heroes to their final resting places during funeral processions. Recently, this extraordinary vehicle received an upgrade thanks to the dedication of a volunteer Fire Captain.
A volunteer Fire Captain, who is a carpenter by trade, took on this remarkable project to replace the worn-out floor and outdated casket securement system in the restored fire truck. Drawing on his expertise, he carefully measured, cut, stained and sealed the hardwood to provide a new sturdy and safe foundation for years to come. Once the new floor was in place, he installed our Casket Slide Mounting System. Through his craftsmanship and selfless commitment, he brought new life to the firetruck.
The members of the Caribou Volunteer Fire Department believe in honoring past and present fallen heroes with the utmost dignity and respect. Their dedication to meticulously maintaining this fire truck, referred to as “Old #1” assures that it is always on call to take Caribou firefighters on their final ride.
As the restored fire truck proudly makes its way through the streets during funeral processions, the community stands in awe, grateful for the opportunity to witness such a profound display of respect. The upgraded casket securement system serves as a powerful reminder that every detail matters when paying tribute to those who have selflessly protected and served.
Caribou's converted American Lafrance is a symbol of love, respect, and everlasting gratitude. It reminds us that the impact of these dedicated individuals extends far beyond their active years. Their legacy lives on, forever carried in the hearts of the community they protected and served.
