At G. Burns, we believe in supporting those who dedicate their lives to serving others. That's why we were honored to collaborate with the Last Alarm Foundation of North Carolina (LAFNC) on their project to create a Last Alarm Apparatus—a fire-engine funeral hearse dedicated to fallen firefighters and first responders.

Preserving History, Honoring Service

The journey began with a historic find—an antique fire truck originally commissioned in 1944 by the Rosiclaire Illinois Volunteer Fire Department. Purchased from a collector in Arizona and later transported to North Carolina, the truck arrived in remarkably good condition for its age.

"Our mission at LAFNC is to uphold the traditions of the fire service by converting this vintage fire truck into a dignified final transport for our fallen heroes," says Sean Quinby, Executive Director of LAFNC.

Transforming Tradition

With meticulous care, the Last Alarm Foundation prepared the truck for its new role. The conversion involved removing the water tank and repositioning the hose reel to create space in the hose bed for caskets. Using materials readily available, including ¾” treated plywood and hickory flooring sourced locally, a sturdy bed was crafted that seamlessly integrated with the truck frame.

"The collaboration with G. Burns was instrumental," adds Quinby. "Their expertise and support ensured that every detail, from the layout alignment to the installation of specialized hardware, was executed flawlessly."

A Testament to Functionality

To demonstrate the truck's capability, LAFNC acquired a display casket from Thacker Caskets, showcasing how smoothly it accommodates its solemn purpose. "The casket slides in and out effortlessly," Quinby remarks proudly, underscoring the vehicle's practicality and respect for the fallen.

Looking Ahead

While the current iteration of the Last Alarm fire truck fulfills its solemn duty admirably, LAFNC has ambitious plans for its future. Executive Director Sean Quinby envisions a complete restoration, aiming to enhance the vehicle's functionality and ensure it remains a fitting tribute to our heroes.
